The nickname "The Northeast Kingdom" was created by Governor George Aiken during a political appearance, on March 24th 1949 on the steps of the Darling Inn in Lyndonville, Vermont. He said "You know, this is such beautiful country up here. It ought to be called the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont."
